About Homegrown Joy

Homegrown Joy is a personal blog meant to express small everyday joys that come into my life unexpectedly, that I seek out knowingly, and that I create myself.  I want to share these joys with you, my dear readers, because I believe in my soul that today’s world is too fast, too commercial, and too disconnected.  No matter what is going on in your life, in your day, in this hour, there is something to smile about (or at least find some kind of comfort in if things are indeed going very poorly).  And it can be ANYTHING!  There is of course the usual family, health, life, a roof over your head (hopefully), and trust me I do not discount those things in the least–they are and always will be things we should be happy and grateful for above all else–but in the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, I’m speaking more to the small things that bring us a little more happiness, more joy, a better mood, a bigger smile.  Like actually taking the time to enjoy that cup of coffee in the morning, grabbing lunch with a friend, trying a new recipe that turns out to be delicious, finishing a outstanding project (successfully), taking a warm shower without interruptions from anyone, and falling into the amazing softness of my pillow at the end of the day.

And maybe I’m a little different that I find joy in these small things.  Maybe they are just a regular part of a regular day, but why not be happy during all your ‘regular’ days? Personally, I spent too long at a job that made me unhappy everyday of my life, even days when I wasn’t at work I was too burnt out from work to enjoy my day off, or too worried about the emails piling up for when I got back.  I don’t think that kind of life is worth it, to be so unhappy. Sooo……after making poor choices, getting too caught up in work, and losing part of who I really am in the past year, I quit that job and now am taking a brand new direction.

I currently create and sell jewelry and hand knit accessories (and some other random neat things) on Etsy.  If you want to see some of the fabulous things I make, check out http://www.etsy.com/shop/LittleNoteCrafts

In my crafting style I hold many of the same ideas about small pieces of joy for our every day lives–like little music notes throughout the day that can improve our moods.  I love to knit first and foremost, and jewelry is a new and upcoming love in my life as well.  I use a lot of different colors (some bright, some more warm and homey) but everything I make is made with passion and joy and a lot of care.  I want to touch people’s live in a way that makes their day better, that brings out a smile or a laugh, or maybe adds more boldness to their style that helps them be a more confident person.

But enough about that.  My shop is a big part of my life now, but it’s not the only part.  I will often post about cool new projects I’m working on, because I like sharing the process and  getting input from my readers on the design, or maybe a new promotion I’m having (as loyal readers you deserve some cool perks like exclusive discounts), but I’ll also post about my adventures in the kitchen or the garden or some other part of my life I want to tell you about.  I love cooking so much that I put together my own cookbook, and I make jam, homemade bread, pickles, peanut butter, and all sorts of new desserts and dishes (mostly desserts, I have a huge sweet tooth).  As for the garden, I jumped for joy this year when my pepper plants actually sprouted from seed–seeds I had saved and dried from STORE BOUGHT peppers the year before.  Proving you don’t need to spend money on packets of seeds when you probably throw away tons of seeds already.

Speaking of money, I might occasionally post tips and tricks on how to be frugal (like the best way to save and store those pepper seeds I mentioned).  Having quit my job with a stable income and trying to survive on the sales of handmade goods, I’ve found it pays to find creative ways to save money.  All the while never forgetting some of the basics (like freezing extras of whatever was on sale that week).

I also love to read, watch movies, and attend various events around town.  I live near a college campus, so there is always something going on.  If it’s interesting enough I might post about that too. Or maybe you want more information about something I might know about, or a post on how to make a pom-pom or bake bread.  Whatever it is, let me know!

If I had to summarize all this to a mission statement for this blog, it would be:

Above all, if it brought some extra joy to my day, then I want it to bring some extra joy to your day too.  Life is special, and too short to not be happy for at least one minute out of the day (and that may just be the minute you take read my blog).  Take what you find here and go forth into the day a little bit happier!

And thank you for taking the time to read this very long About page.  Without you, my readers, I would be no where, so I do appreciate your time and I hope you enjoy my blog!

  1. Wow! Thank you so much 🙂 I’ve been feeling pulled in so many directions lately, I felt like I’ve been putting this blog on the back burner a bit. But you motivate me to keep going!
